The NBA Draft's Five Best Second Overall Picks Since 1984

The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to pick former Oklahoma Sooners star Blake Griffin Thursday with the first overall selection in the 2009 NBA Draft at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

So I've noticed that I got 8 out of my 9 last predictions right and since tonight's cards say we may win, hopefully this will be right too. I'm gonna just dive right in with this reading. The first ca

While I struggled with the concept of losing a team I had grown up with, I wondered what my options were. Was there a way to jeopardize my fanhood in this situation? I came across an article ("Rules for being a true fan," Feb. 2002), which, though dated, actually helped me immensely in my decision. A friend of mine, also a die-hard Sonic fan, decided he would join me in deciding where we should take our loyalties.

A big thanks to everyone who participated in the "Inbound Link Contest".  We have a winner!  A big congratulations go out to Marija.  Thank you for all your hard work on this.  While we had a lot of people participate, Marija was able to win with only 4 links!  So it wouldn't have taken a lot to win this contest!  We'll be having another contest soon so stay tuned.

We already know they can't be called the Supersonics because Seattle still holds the rights to that. I would've liked to seem the team choose a name that reflects the Native American culture of Oklahoma...perhaps the Cherokees. But even if the Cherokee officials gave their blessing, it would still be too politically incorrect.

At first I was ecstatic.  A Seattle icon will be the voice of the new Seattle Sounders FC.  Kevin Calabro, in the booth, calling the game, making soccer come alive in Seattle.  But then, I started thinking.  Am I going to like KC calling a soccer match?  When he speaks will I just hear echoes of Sonic basketball?  Am I ready for such a familiar figure donning a different shade of green?

I am furious.  The Sonics are gone and America doesn't seem to care.  On today's Around the Horn 3 of 4 panelists said the NBA is better off in Oklahoma City.  That statement is ludicrous.

Here are my thoughts about the city of Seattle letting the Sonics leave

1. Seattle/Washington legislature are all idiots
If you are a Washington resident, I implore you to not re-elect our Governor (Christine Gregoire). If you live in Seattle, we need a new city council and Mayor. These people had a chance to keep the team here, twice! Yet, nothing was done. We need change if we are to ever get basketball back here again.

Like most, I am upset about the departure of Seattle's beloved SuperSonics, but I am not writing to vent or point fingers, but rather make other interesting points.

Interesting Point #1:  How will the NBA's western conference be aligned?  Or is the NBA just going to rename the Northwest division?  Oklahoma City is not the northwest and as a resident of the northwest I would be annoyed by the labeling of Oklahoma City as northwest.  It's just not right.  Are they going to be put in the Southwest division, where they belong, making western conference divisions unbalanced?  We'll see.

In case you didn't hear, the Sonics have made a deal with the city of Seattle and will be leaving for Oklahoma City for this season. In return, the City will recieve 45 million dollars from owner Clayton Bennett, and could recieve an extra 30 million if the City does not recieve a new NBA team by 2013. The City also keeps the Sonics' names, records, etc.

Well, another NBA Draft has come and gone. There were a few surprises, and more than a few things went as projected. Here's a rundown

Rose and Beasley went 1/2, respectively

OJ Mayo was selected 3rd by Minnesota, who eventually traded him to Memphis for Kevin Love in an 8 player deal

Last year's NBA draft was easy as a Sonics fan.  Take either Durant or Oden, whoever was left.  This year however, it’s a whole new ball game.  As soon as it was announced the Sonics would have the fourth pick in this draft I thought “what does that mean?”  Now, I'm not stupid, I understand what having the fourth pick means, I just didn't know what that would get them.

As the trial regarding the Seattle Sonics continues I am again infuriated at the whole situation.  Most of my frustration is not with Clay Bennett though.  Although he is most likely taking our Sonics away he is a business man with interests of his own.  I am more frustrated with David Stern and the NBA.

The situation that should be David Stern’s worst nightmare continues.  I say should because Stern continues to brush aside “rogue” former NBA official Tim Donaghy.  In the past couple of days Donaghy has claimed that NBA officials have influenced the outcome of NBA playoff games, including, perhaps most notably, game six of the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Despite the drama surrounding the Seattle Sonics I highly anticipated the NBA Draft Lottery selection today.  I salivated at the possible combination of Beasley and Durant.  However we ended with the the 4th overall pick.  GM Sam Presti should immediately deal this pick for a star or upcoming star who can provide leadership and 4th quarter stability. I'm very high on Chris Duhon, who is an unrestricted free agent this year.  He possess great awareness, defense, three point shooting and is a proven winner.  Jose Calderon is a restricted free agent, but would be worth every penny! Ron Artest is another viable option because of his toughness and experience, however he is definitely a high risk proposition.  The most exciting, pie in the sky scenario would involve bringing in Gilbert Arenas!  Get ready for an interesting off-season...

Sonics Fans: Even though the NBA is trying to decimate our love for the league by reducing our pick to 4th instead of 2nd, don't fear.

The Sonics will most likely acquire either Jerryd Bayless (PG, Arizona) or Brook Lopez (C, Stanford). The Supes will not have much say in the matter though, as the Minnesota Timberwolves are most likely to take one of these two as well.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, May 20th) at 5pm PST, Kevin Durant will have the honor of representing the Sonics at the NBA Draft Lottery. The Supes have a great chance of obtaining the number One overall selection (19.9% to be exact). Here's a look at what they may do if they get the #1 pick.

In a vote that surprised no one, NBA owners approved a move of the Seattle Sonics to Oklahoma City by a margin of 28-2. The two dissenting votes came from Dallas owner Mark Cuban and Portland owner Paul Allen.

One of the stories coming out of last night's loss to the Sonics is the blow to the Blazer's chance of a winning record. Another is the Blazer's shooting woes, something that has plagued the team all year, if they don't shoot well the don't win. With Oden coming next year, giving an inside presence that could be capable of easy baskets in the paint, that problem could be solved.
